There are 6 different schools of Magic in Aenaroth. Of the 6, 5 are regularly taught to anyone willing to learn them. The sixth is reserved only for those who serve in the Dragon Knights.
Lore:
Magic was originally incredibly difficult to learn, as when people first began to arrive in the Dragon Vale, it was an unknown skill, and the mythical beings who called Aenaroth home couldn’t help explain it, as they had often been subconsciously using it since a very young age. As spells were crafted to help control the natural energies, it was discovered that humanity could do something none of the mythical beasts could. They could use more than one elemental magic.
After months of dedicated studying, the 6 schools were documented, and the first people who truly understood how to use it set out to teach. But as those who had learned the darkest of the schools began to set out, they were sworn to secrecy by Dukran, on fear of the devastating power that the school held. While initially resistant, the spell-users realized the truth behind his words and swore to keep the school to themselves. This was when they were given a surprise offer. They were asked to teach a select number of warriors, who would serve as the greatest warriors of the realm and defenders of stability. These warriors, nicknamed as the Dragon Knights due to the fact that they fought alongside the dragons they had befriended, quickly molded the school into an incredibly professional art. They preserved the spells within tomes of power, and stored these tomes inside the citadel of Aenaroth. Ever since, anyone who passed the training in the order was taught the powerful spells held within, and would only use them against the darkest of foes.
Schools of Magic:
Wind: Manipulation of the air, capable of creating hurricane speed winds, with enough concentration and skill. While difficult to learn at first, once a person has learned the basics, they can easily advance to mastery.
Earth: Manipulation of the earth around a user. Those strong in the school have been known to cause miniature earthquakes against their foes. A moderately difficult school, casters are often able to reach mastery if they dedicate their minds to the task.
Water: Control of water. Depending on the skill of the caster, and the level of spell used, even in a desert water can be drawn forth to attack a foe. Incredibly hard to learn, and equally as hard to master, this school relies on a calm and collected mind to cast its spells. Those who cannot slow their thoughts often find themselves hitting a wall with how far they can reach in this school.
Fire: Creation or control of fire. This is one of the easiest to learn schools, while being on of the hardest to master. Anything from starting a small campfire to controlling raging forest fires is within a casters grasp, depending on their skill.
Light/Holy: This school, comprised of using concentrated light to attack a casters foe, has been often called holy magic, due to its association with absolute good. This school is incredibly difficult to learn, and is often practiced by people who have managed to completely master at least one other school. Someone who has mastered this school can often overcome numerous opponents with relative ease.
[Exclusive] Life/Death: The only school that is restricted in its teachings, this school is exclusively taught to those who become fully fledged Dragon Knights. A sacred oath is made before it is learned that a Knight will never pass on knowledge of the schools casting to anyone who is not a fellow Knight. This school is the control of life itself. It can be used to either grow entire forests, heal grievous wounds...or bring death to entire armies. The power is so great, that many of the more powerful spells are only taught to those who achieve the rank of Dragon Paladin within the Knights.
All of the schools also have sub-schools, specializing in specific parts of their powers. However, they are often lumped in under the primary title in most official records.
Spells:
Each school’s magic has different levels of spells. They range from tier 1 spells, such as starting fires for the school of fire, to creating deluges of water from the sky.
There are 10 tiers of power in a spell. The most powerful spells are often capable of winning entire engagements in a matter of moments. However, the strain on the caster is almost always enough to place them on bed-rest for anywhere from a few hours for a master of the school to weeks for someone still learning the school.
It is even possible for someone without enough training to kill themselves from the strain.
Rumors are abound of spells that are so powerful, they exist in a separate skill level, known as tier 11. The only spell ever witnessed to potentially fall into this category was the casting of a Light spell powerful enough to completely destroy a Gateway in a single blast. The caster was rendered unconscious for a period of 2 days, and was unable to concentrate enough to cast spells of any kind for months afterwards.
Primordial Magic:
There is a great deal of residual energies from when the first portals began to open. Though nobody had yet to figure out why, these energies have not faded further, and some reports indicate that they increase shortly before a new gateway opens. Nevertheless, leading historians suspect that these energies, tentatively titled as Primordial Magics, are responsible for the portals, and that as long as one exists, the other will continue to exist as well.
