It was a trying time for many realms, great sicknesses rages across plains, food stocks were poisoned by raiders, and many were dying. It was in this time of great suffering that the Nexus, a center point for many of the natural pathways, was greatly affected by the massive surge of negative thoughts and feelings. Nearly overwhelmed, it finally shattered its powerful seals. It was this breaking of the seals that opened the first portals. While the realm of Aenaroth resided very close to the Nexus, it wasn’t until then that the residents of the realm bore witness to its physical existence.
As the portals opened, a few brave souls, tired of suffering in their own realms, decided to strike forth into these mysterious points. One of these people, today known only as Dukran, entered the realm. Through some form of luck, or perhaps fate, the portal Dukran entered through lead him to save a dragon from corrupted attackers. As a result of this Dukran was one of the first to meet the dragons of Aenaroth. While initially very wary, and ready to strike the dragon he had saved down, he hesitated from the way that the dragon reacted. For it was not with aggression, but with what looked like fear and intelligence. Laying down his blade, Dukran slowly approached the dragon. It was this careful approach that showed him they were not dumb beasts capable only of death and destruction, but highly intelligent creatures.
For months, Dukran lived in close proximity to a great number of dragons, carefully learning to speak with them as he in turn showed them how he lived. As time passed, others joined Dukran, either of the original few who had made the journey, or as others now braving the portals into lands unknown. As the numbers of people grew, Dukran carefully molded them into a new civilization, one built around peace and prosperity of the Realm of Aenaroth. After a great amount of time learning from the dragons their language, the people of Aenaroth finally bridged the final gaps that lay in their way to stability. Quickly forming peace with dragons across the realm, Dukran and the proto-government looked to the greatest threats to the realm.
It had become obvious that the portals were opening nearly at random throughout Aenaroth. While most portals were no bigger than 6 to 9 feet tall and a few feet wide, there were some that would open that were dozens of feet wide and tall. These portals, quickly nicknamed as ‘Gateways’, often opened to dangerous lands, with monsters pouring through them within mere hours of appearing. Though dragons and other mythical creatures had often taken to fighting the monsters that would pour out, defending their realm with ferocity, they suffered great losses against often armed monsters. With people beginning to form a proto-empire in the realm, and the barriers of speech broken down, they were quickly informed of the danger that the Gateways posed.
Learning from the dragons and other mythical beasts of the realm, people had began to experiment with the flowing energies of the realm. Through the investigation of these rivers of latent power, it was theorized that people, and essentially any creature of the realm, could, and probably had, tap into it to create feats of unimaginable power. Those who were testing it called it nothing short of magic, and eventually it was simply accepted that it was magic. But it was also discovered that through careful manipulation of these energies around a portal, the stability of portals could be radically increased, to the point where they would no longer collapse at random. Further, it was theorized that a Gateway could be forcibly closed if the energies were suitably interrupted from a very close distance. It was from this theory that the first major military offensive from the people living in Aenaroth began. Fighting alongside the then dwindling dragons and other creatures through hordes of monstrous beasts, Dukran and a small group of those who had taught themselves how to manipulate the energies of Aenaroth managed to reach one of the largest Gateways that had remained open for months. Until then, the creatures who had lived in the realm of Aenaroth before the portals first opened had refused to approach it. Baffled, the people who had come after insisted that an attack be made on this portal. After much arguing, it was agreed it was too much of a risk to leave it open. Now, fighting tooth, claw, and blade through a bloodbath, the residents of Aenaroth managed to create an opening directly to the imposing Gateway. With heavy losses, Dukran and the other survivors threw everything they had at a last ditch effort to destroy the portal. With the beasts bearing down upon them, those best able to use the flowing energies set to work disrupting the flow of it. In only a matter of seconds from starting, the incredible backlash from the natural energies resisting the disruption forced numerous people and creatures throughout the realm to their knees in pain. But it had worked. The Gateway almost instantly lost cohesion and began to dissipate. But even as it vanished, several other Gateways began to appear. Utterly devastated, Dukran and those around him had collapsed, thinking all was lost. But the warriors persevered, managing to gain control of the new Gateways before they could be twisted by the dark energies that flowed, bringing them under the peaceful control of the warriors of Aenaroth.
Within a few years of the clearing of the Nexus, the Realm of Aenaroth had formed itself into a powerful nation. The Gateways in the Nexus opened the realm to peaceful immigration, and the government had created a massive city around the point. Set on a nearby hill, a massive citadel had been erected, serving as the center of power for the realm. With numerous other buildings constructed, a legislature had been formed from those who had joined Aenaroth as citizens, the powerful Dragon Knights saw themselves serving the realm as peacekeepers, and brave adventurers journeyed forth to portals in search of treasure and fame.
